Strategy Course 
March 15 2013 (apply before March 6th)
 
During this day you will intensively get to know the work of a strategy consultant at OC&C. We will start with a presentation about OC&C by one of our partners followed by an introduction from the client, a candy manufacturer who is an international market leader position in the Dutch and wants to improve his position. In the afternoon you will prepare an advice for the client. Under the guidance of consultants you structure the questions, formulate your hypotheses and test them with your fact-based analysis. The challenge is great; at the end of the day the client expects a presentation of your advice. We will end the day with drinks and dinner.

OC&C Ringvaart Regatta

OC&C Strategy Consultants are the main sponsor of the annual “Ringvaart Regatta” rowing event staged in the month of May by the Delft student rowing association “Laga”. Not only do we sponsor this gruelling 100-kms rowing event around the Haarlemmermeerpolder – we also participate in the competition with our very own coxed eight. This year the OC&C Ringvaart Regatta will take place on Wednesday 29 May.

OC&C Summer School
July 8-12 2013

This July, the Rotterdam office of OC&C Strategy Consultants will be staging a ‘Summer School’ introduction to strategy consulting for a select group of six university undergraduate students. Successful applicants will be invited to join our team for a week to gain first-hand experience of the work of a strategy consultant. Our Summer School will offer a combination of learning on the job and classroom training courses in relevant skills, facilitated by OC&C consultants. In the evenings, we’ll socialise over drinks and dinner, allowing you to get to know our team personally. On the final day of the Summer School, applicants will give a presentation about their project and how they have experienced their ‘week in the life of a strategy consultant’.

 
When?
OC&C Strategy Consultants’ Summer School will be from Monday 8 July to Friday 12 July 2013. Participants will stay either in a hotel in Rotterdam or in the vicinity of the client of the project team to which they have been assigned.

 
For whom?
OC&C Strategy Consultants’ Summer School is targeted at second and third-year undergraduates wishing to explore strategy consulting as a future career option. Maybe you would like to arrange a work placement at a consulting firm but cannot, at this stage, free yourself from your studies for an uninterrupted period of 6-8 weeks. Or perhaps you would like to get some first-hand experience in strategy consulting before starting your post-graduate programme. Our Summer School offers you an action-packed – and fun! – week in which to find out what the work and life of a strategy consultant is all about.

 
Application procedure
Second and third-year university undergraduates interested in joining our Summer School can apply before May 22 2013. Send your CV and copies of your high school diploma and final examination scores, as well as your university examination results to date, along with your letter of motivation, to recruitment@occstrategy.nl. Selected applicants will be invited for a second round; you will be informed on May 24 2013 whether you are in this group. Applicants who are through to the second round will come to our Rotterdam office on May 31 for a full-day programme including a numerical proficiency test and a case interview. Next Monday, you will be informed whether you have been accepted for our Summer School.

Irvin Faneyte joined OC&C in 1996. He started out in the Rotterdam office and subsequently worked across Europe in various sectors, including B2B services, transportation and media.

Adding to his extensive M&A work while at OC&C, Irvin left the firm in 2005 to broaden his experience in investment banking. He re-joined OC&C as a partner early in 2007.

In addition to his M&A work across industries, Irvin currently focuses on the transportation, leisure, and media sectors.

“Solutions bigger than a drawing board”

Bram Kuijpers has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Delft University of Technology. He specialized in logistics, working as an intern for a Swedish shipping company. He liked engineering very much, but he opted for strategy consulting.

Technology has always fascinated me: from large-scale plants and machineries to the mechanics of my own car. During my internship, however, I realised I simply could not picture myself in the drawing room - For me, strategy consulting is the way to both develop and apply my analytical skills, beyond engineering.

Now, I spend my days twisting my brain, with lots of thinking and calculating, but the questions are totally different. Products, processes, cost structure: everything is turned around. The end result is bigger than would ever fit on a drawing board.

I received several offers from consulting firms. My choice for OC&C is based on the people and the atmosphere. I am learning a lot from my OC&C team members, but they see me as equal. That openness and equality decided it for me.

“I’ve still got a lot to learn – and at OC&C I will”

Elcke Jansen studied Technology Management at Eindhoven University, graduating in Operations Management & Logistics on research she did at Leuven University in Belgium and with ASML, a manufacturer of semiconductor production equipment.

I have to be busy, it energises me. And I’m a good planner – I know how to keep an eye on the total picture. That’s why I became enthusiastic about consulting once I’d decided to go into business. It is a dynamic and analytically challenging profession. And we work in teams of young people.

Why OC&C? For one, the quantitative approach to consulting: developing recommendations on the basis of solid analyses of hard facts. Secondly, the broad perspective we take in our work (an approach which I enjoyed as a student, too) – that is to say, we don’t look at issues in isolation but take the whole business into account.

Finally, OC&C has a super working climate. I’ve clearly got much to learn, still – and at OC&C, I will!

“At OC&C, I’m learning how the world turns”

Eline Leijten (1987) holds Master’s degrees in Financial Economics and Labour Law from Rotterdam’s Erasmus University. She was an active member of her student association, worked as a volunteer  at a school in Sri Lanka and did a work placement at a law firm. Eline joined OC&C in June 2012. In her spare time, she sings in a band.

Just when we were looking for business sponsors for our association almanac, the financial crisis hit in the autumn of 2008. OC&C offered to help us brainstorm about potential options. I’d never heard of ‘strategy consulting’ or OC&C before, but what a surprise it was: in just two hours we had a fully-fledged plan on the table, having explored all sorts of options we hadn’t thought of before.

I instantly felt that I ‘clicked’ with OC&C and although I later attended business courses at other firms as well, I leaped at the chance when OC&C made me an offer. The atmosphere here is brilliant: informal but professional, no back-stabbing but team players keen to help each other.

The great thing about strategy consulting is that you don’t immediately start specialising in a particular industry but instead get first-hand experience with the inner workings of a wide variety of companies. In my first six months at OC&C, I worked on five different assignments: investment opportunities for private equity firms, merchandising at a retailer, and developing an online position for a media company. At OC&C, I’m learning how the world turns.

Marc has served clients in different industries, notably the consumer sectors (both consumer goods and retail), but also transport and financial services. He assisted clients in these industries on a full range of strategic issues such as mergers and acquisitions, strategic planning, new business development, pricing and assortment, and new channel strategy.

After Mechiel Wilbrink had received his degree in Applied Physics from Eindhoven University of Technology an academic career beckoned, yet in August 2002 he opted for OC&C.

As a student, I already knew that I needed more variety. When I discovered strategy consulting, my first thought was: this is exactly what I have been looking for; complex issues, just as in science, plus giving the solutions a practical translation whilst taking into account the people you are working for.

In the first years, most of my attention went to mastering the basics: analysing, interviewing, presenting. Gradually, my attention shifted to building valuable relationships with clients, in order to really begin to understand what the advice means for them.

Ever since I first came here, I have felt a match. I instantly felt I could make a difference. Together with talented, entrepreneurial and very diverse colleagues, it was an intuitive choice, which I still support wholeheartedly.

Herman
Associate consultant

Herman Heijmerikx (1985) graduated in Applied Physics from Twente University, his degree work including a research internship at the University of California at Berkeley. He was a member of the team behind his university’s 2007 ‘Bedrijvendagen’ business event, and travelled to Russia, Mongolia and China with his student association, Arago. Herman joined OC&C in September 2011.

‘I knew some of the people at OC&C and their enthusiasm convinced me to apply for a work placement. I was accepted and in the summer of 2010 I worked in two OC&C project teams – one analysing a transport and storage firm in edible oils that was up for sale, the second investigating the outlook for a manufacturer of ready meals on behalf of a potential investor.

That experience clinched it for me: this was where I wanted to be. I greatly enjoyed the type of work, and I especially enjoyed the people at OC&C – they were a great bunch: young, energetic, driven, eager to learn and fun to be with. Also, as a team we were working on projects with immediate client impact.

I had a fantastic start at OC&C. Only two weeks after joining, I went to Chicago for the firm’s international training week. When I got back from the States, I was assigned to a team looking into partnership options for two public service providers. My next project involved designing a strategy for a food products manufacturer.’
